Truck smashes into barbershop in Davidson; premise liability issues can arise

Our Charlotte accident attorneys noted an incident this week in Davidson in which a Winston-Salem man crashed his pickup truck through the front wall of a barber shop.

Such accidents happen with more frequency than most people think. And they can be extremely dangerous. Unsuspecting occupants can be struck by the vehicle, hit by falling debris or crushed by objects being shoved around in the collision.

While the vehicle’s driver is always at fault, a property owner can also share the blame. This is not always the same as the business owner, as many businesses, such as those in strip malls, rent space from mall or building owners. The picture in this case shows a small curb, but no parking stops, posts, or other obstacles aimed at preventing vehicles from smashing into the building.

In this case, the driver was on Old North Carolina Highway 150 on Monday afternoon when he reportedly choked on a swallow of Mountain Dew. His white GMC truck veered off the road, across the parking lot and straight through the front of Sharon’s Barbershop.

Fortunately, the business was closed at the time or the injuries could have been extensive, officials from the Arcadia Fire Department reported. Customers of the shop typically sit in waiting chairs on the other side of the window, exactly where the crash occurred.

The accident is under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
